Today is the day of the year again, Apple is about to launch its latest iOS update, iOS 18. Packed with exciting new features, iOS 18 will be available for free starting today September 16th.
However, before we continue into the upgrade, there are a few steps you need to take to ensure a smooth transition of the update.
Step 1: Check Device Compatibility of iOS 18
First and foremost, confirm that your iPhone is eligible for iOS 18. Here’s the list of supported devices:
iPhone SE (2nd generation)
iPhone SE (3rd generation)
iPhone XR
iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max
iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max
iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max
iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max
iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max
iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max
If your device isn’t on this list, unfortunately, you won’t be able to enjoy iOS 18 and its features.
Step 2: Prepare for Potential Delays
Apple’s servers often get overloaded on the release day of a major iOS update, which could slow down the installation process. To avoid issues, it’s a good idea to make sure your device is updated to the latest available software before iOS 18 rolls out. This will help the new update download more smoothly and protect your phone from potential security vulnerabilities.
If you are cautious, you may want to wait a week after the release for iOS 18.1, which usually addresses any bugs found in the initial version.
Step 3: Free Up Storage Space
Make sure your iPhone has enough storage to accommodate the iOS 18 update. Apple recommends having at least 15GB of free space. Previous versions like iOS 17 required around 11GB, so iOS 18 will likely take up at least 12GB.
If you are running low on storage, consider deleting unused apps, removing downloaded content, or moving photos and videos to iCloud.
Step 4: Back Up Your Data
It’s always smart to back up your iPhone before installing a major update. You can do this via iCloud, Finder (on a Mac), or iTunes (on a PC). In the past, some users have reported losing valuable data, such as old text messages or photos, during updates.
Step 5: Ensure Your Battery Is Charged
Before starting the update, make sure your iPhone has enough battery life. If your phone runs out of power while updating, it could “brick” the device, rendering it unresponsive. While the update only takes about 30 minutes, it’s wise to ensure your battery is sufficiently charged.
You can also set your iPhone to update automatically overnight while it charges. To enable this:
1. Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
2. Tap Automatic Updates and turn on Download iOS Updates.
3. Enable Install iOS Updates to allow your phone to install updates while charging.
