Apple’s iPhone 16 Introduces New Features to improve Repairability, See How?

Despite the flood of hardware announcements at Apple’s recent “Glowtime” event for the iPhone 16, one topic that didn’t get any stage time was repairability. This omission stood out, especially considering the growing momentum behind the right to repair movement in recent years. However, a closer look after the event revealed that Apple has added several new features to the new 16 aimed at making repairs easier for users.

One of the most notable updates is a new adhesive design that can be loosened by applying low voltage from a 9 volt battery. Adhesive has long been a frustration for DIY repairers, as thinner devices have led manufacturers like Apple to rely more on glue instead of screws.

This reliance on glue was a major reason Apple’s previous Self Service Repair kits were so bulky they included a device to melt the adhesive during battery replacements. Interestingly, this new ionized adhesive is featured on the 16 and 16 Plus, but not on the Pro models.

The Pro versions do, however, benefit from a redesigned interior layout, making components more accessible. Additionally, the LiDAR Scanner can now be serviced.

Another major update is the introduction of Repair Assistant with iOS 18. This tool is designed to help both professional technicians and consumers by calibrating various modules to ensure performance levels that previously depended on parts pairing policy.

Finally, the TrueDepth Camera in the 16 series can now be repaired without needing to connect the device to a Mac, making it easier for users to manage repairs on their own.
